IELTS Writing Test P2 - life expectancy

Life expectancy is increasing in the developed countries which is really an exciting and encouraging fact. Longer lives may bring us more happiness and time with our beloved family. However, on the other hand, some problems can also be caused because of the extended lives.

Nowadays, the medical technology has been rapidly advanced compared to decades ago which means lower death rate both for newborns and elder people. So we should see an expansion in population of the young generation and old people. But the reality is, in most developed countries, the proportion of young people actually dropped in the recent decades as fewer people are willing to raise babies these days. Thus, the proportion of the elder people rises while the proportion of the young people drops which will finally result in aging population. With more elder people than the society can actually bear, a lot of problems will start to appear. Firstly, their welfare system will suffer as those countries are going to take care of more older people, while the income of the welfare system may decrease because of the low proportion of young people. Secondly, there will be fewer job opportunities for young people. Because the welfare system may not be able to pay enough pension for the elder people, they'll have to work longer which is definitely going to reduce the available job vacancies. The last but not the least, the pressure for their medical system will be very heavy due to the increased need for medical resources of elder people.

To solve these problems, I think they should invest more in medical and nursing industries. Although it's true that elder population is a big burden to the society, it can also be converted to a big market. For medical or nursing service industries,  more elder people means more clients who can bring them more profit. And the improvement of those two industries will strengthen the societies' ability of looking after more elder people as well as creating more job opportunities for young generation.

To conclude, I think living longer is a nice thing, although it may bring us the problem of aging population. In a way, we can expect to solve that problem by investing and improving the medical and nursing services.
